Team Marianjoy

May 22, 2012

Me and my family (sister, dad and mom) after the Human Race.

Growing up I absolutely hated running. Well, it’s funny how things change because now I am completely enamored with it. I started consistently running last summer, and have been doing it ever since.

A few weeks ago I ran a 5k, the inaugural DuPage Human Race. This was the third 5k I’ve ran since I got into running, and let me tell you, they get more fun each time. This run was a bit more special too because it had ties to my mom’s work, Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital. With the Human Race, we were able to choose the organization we wanted to run for and donate to, so needless to say, we were Team Marianjoy.

Along with the 5k, there was also a 2 Mile Fitness Walk that my parents participated in while my sister and I ran. It was actually really great being able to do the event with the whole family (the rents aren’t into running like my sister and I are).

I was determined to beat my personal record from my previous 5ks but unfortunately I got a terrible side stich half way through the race which slowed me down. Although, my sister taught me a few useful tricks to get rid of them during a race… 1) Change your breathing pace, mainly slow down and take deeper breaths. 2) Put your arms over your head. Yes, you will look funny doing this while you’re running, but I promise you, it significantly helps!

Even though I didn’t beat my PR, but I still had a blast doing this run.  I’ve got another 5k next week and two 5k obstacle courses later this summer. I cannot wait!

Dashing for the finish line!

Almost there…!
